Frances Lightbound is an artist based in Chicago who works in printmaking, sculpture, and installation. Lightbound’s practice plays within the flux of moving bodies and built, static objects. In the following conversation she guides us through her different series of work and her explorations into slipping representation, shadows and space, and the grid as a system of contradictions.

Study for a Threshold, Cyanotype on Muslin, 2017.

Lightbound received her MFA in Print Media from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC) in 2016, where she received a New Artist Society Scholarship (2014-2016). She is currently a faculty member at SAIC in the departments of Printmedia and Adult Continuing Education. Lightbound has been an artist-in-residence at: HATCH Projects Artist Resident, Chicago Artists Coalition, 2016-2017; The "Toolbox'' Project, Studio Pavilion at House for an Art Lover, Glasgow, UK, July 2017; Ox-Bow School of Art Fall Residency 2017; The Center Program, Hyde Park Art Center, Chicago, IL, 2017-2018, and New Edition, Hyde Park Art Center, Chicago, IL, 2019-2020. She will be completing her most recent residency at Ragdale Foundation in October 2022.
